The Central European University (CEU) in Budapest is an internationally recognized institution of graduate education in social sciences and humanities.

The Central European University (CEU) in Budapest is an internationally recognized institution of graduate education in social sciences and humanities. CEU contributes to the development of an open society in Central and Eastern Europe and in the ex-Soviet countries by promoting an educational system that approaches the issues from a creative, critical and comparative point of view.
The program addresses all senior students and alumni that received a license diploma at an accredited institution of higher education.
The program offers master and doctoral studies for the academic year of 2005-2006. The English taught courses are held within the Central European University in Budapest. The scholarships awarded may be full or partial, depending on the results of the selection process.
Areas of study: Economics (MA, PhD), Environmental Sciences and Policy (MS, PhD), Gender Studies (MA, PhD), History (MA, PhD), International Relations and European Studies (MA), Legal Studies (LLM, MA, SJD), Mathematics and its Applications (PhD), Medieval Studies (MA, PhD), Nationalism Studies (MA), Philosophy (PhD), Political Science (MA, PhD), Public Policy (MPP), Sociology and Social Anthropology (MA, PhD), CEU Graduate School of Business (MBA, IMM, MS).

Applications should include:

The following required documents will be sent to the university individually by the participants:
  • Two recommendation letters for the master programs and three recommendation letters for the doctoral programs, each in a sealed envelope and signed across the seal.
  • Curriculum Vitae and the list with publications (if the case)
  • Certified copy of the Diploma or an official certificate that will attest that the diploma will be received by September 2005, and a photocopy of this certificate (in Romanian, and English)
  • Certified copy of the transcript and a photocopy (in Romanian and English)
  • A statement of purpose / essay specified in the application form (varying topic, depending on the department)

The copies of the diploma and of the academic transcripts should be translated into English by an authorized translator or be certified at the English Department of the faculty.

A good command of English is compulsory. The participants that have been short listed will have to take a TOEFL test organized by the Educational Advising Center on March 5, 2005. On the same day they will be asked to take the other exams that are required by the specific departments.

The participants can apply for two different departments. If this is the case, then they will be asked to fill in two files. Both should comprise a complete set of the required documentation, but for the second file, a photocopy of the official documents is acceptable.
