The CERGE-EI Ph.D. Program

The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education of Charles University and the Economics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (CERGE-EI) in Prague invites interested persons to apply to its program of doctoral studies in theoretical and applied economics, leading to a PhD degree which is fully accredited in the United States and the Czech Republic.
CERGE-EI provides modern post-graduate training in the field of economics. The four-year program consists of two years of coursework followed by two years of supervised dissertation research. The working language of the institution is English.
CERGE-EI graduates have assumed positions in government ministries as policy advisors, chief economists of international banks, professors at universities, and economists at research institutions all over the world.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 30, 2005
All students are granted tuition waivers and monthly stipends for up to four years of study - no separate application is necessary. Successful applicants will be invited to participate in a competitive two-month preparatory semester in July and August, after which final admissions decisions will be made.
Students can ask for travel expenses coverage. The request for such grant should be attached to the application form and should free-format clearly explain why such grant is needed.
ELIGIBILITY: Any individual from any country is welcome to submit an application to CERGE-EI without the assistance of a third party. There is no application fee. All admissions decisions are made internally at CERGE-EI by the faculty admissions committee.
CERGE-EI encourages applications from anyone and does not discriminate on the basis of national origin, race, gender, or religion. Students are expected to have a good background in mathematics as well as sufficient English language skills to fully understand the study material (upper-intermediate to advanced level). Previous education in economics is welcomed, though not required. Applicants are required to have a degree from a university or other institution of higher learning, although an exception is made in the case of a very small number of students who, due to individual circumstances, are allowed to attend CERGE-EI while finishing their Bachelor's or Master's degree. Students are recommended to submit TOEFL and GRE scores, if possible.
HOW TO APPLY: The following materials are required in order for an application to be processed:

  • Application form (http://www.cerge-ei.cz/pdf/study/app-form.pdf);
  • Curriculum vitae (i.e. a one-page outline of your professional background, experience, and skills);
  • Essay (up to 2 pages in length) explaining the reasons why the student should be accepted to the Ph.D. program;
  • Photocopies of all diplomas;
  • Transcripts from all universities attended;
  • Two letters of recommendation (forms available together with the application form) from persons familiar with the student's academic background;
  • Certificate of English proficiency (TOEFL or other exam) or a statement written by the applicant him or herself, describing his or her English proficiency.
All materials must be in English or must be original documents accompanied by English translations.
ADMISSION PROCESS: Approximately 90 candidates are invited to attend the summer Preparatory Semester, which is a two-month semester beginning at the end of June or early July. Performance in the economics, mathematics and English courses taken during the Preparatory semester determines which students are finally admitted to the doctoral program, which typically begins the first week of September.
